Strategy:1 value investment
Value investors seek stocks at a low estimated price. They look for stocks with prices that they believe do not fully reflect the intrinsic value of the security. Value investment is estimated with the idea that the market is somewhat irrational. This irrationality, in theory, provides opportunities to obtain stock at a discounted price and make money from it.
Value investors do not need to comb through financial data volumes to find deals. Tens of thousands of value mutual funds give investors the opportunity to own undervalued stocks. For example, the value of a stock 1000 index is a well-known benchmark for investors and many mutual funds mimic this index.
As discussed above, investors can change strategies at any time but doing so — especially as a value investor — is expensive. However, most investors abandon the strategy after a few years of performance. In 2014, Wall Street Journal reporter Jason Weweig explained, “For the decade ended December 31, value-specific funds in large stocks returned an average of 6.7% per year. But the average investor earns only 5.5% per annum on those funds. ”1 Why did this happen? Because a lot of investors decided to pull their money out and run. The lesson here is that in order to invest value, you have to play a long game.

If you are a true value investor, you do not need to convince anyone that you will be in it for a long time, because this strategy is designed around the idea of buying a business — not stocks. That means the investor should consider the big picture rather than the temporary knockout performance. People often cite legendary investor Warren Buffett as the epitome of the value investor. He does his homework — sometimes for years. When he is ready, he goes all out and makes a long-term commitment.
Consider Buffett's words when he made a significant investment in the aviation industry. He described airlines as "bad in the first century". Then he said, "And they didn't get a bad century, I hope." 2 This idea is a great example of a value investment approach. The choices are based on decades of trends and focus on decades of future performance.
Value investment tools
For those who do not have time to do comprehensive research, the price-to-income ratio (P / E) has become the primary tool for quickly identifying low-value or cheap stocks. This is the same number that comes from dividing the stock share price by the earnings per share (EPS). A low P / E ratio indicates that you are paying less than $ 1 in current income. Value investors seek companies with a low P / E ratio.
While using the P / E ratio is a good start, some experts warn that this measure alone is not enough to make the strategy work. Research published in the Journal of Financial Analysts has concluded that "quantitative investment strategies based on such ratios are not good alternatives to value-investment strategies that use a holistic approach to identifying low-ratio securities." [3] The reason is that, according to their work, investors are often attracted by low P / E ratio stocks based on temporarily increased accounting numbers. These low statistics are, in many cases, the result of a falsely high-income number (denominator). When actual earnings are reported (not just estimated) they are often low. This leads to a "reversal of the average". The P / E ratio increases and the value followed by the investor disappears.
If using the P / E ratio is flawed, what should an investor do to find true value stocks? The researchers suggest that "quantitative approaches to detecting these distortions — such as combining principled value with momentum, quality, and profitability — may help prevent these 'value traps'." 3
Strategy: 2 Growth investment
Rather than looking for low-cost deals, growth investors seek investments that offer strong upside potential when it comes to stocks' future earnings. It can be said that the growth investor is often looking for the “next big thing”. Growth investment, however, is not about recklessly accepting attendance investments. Instead, it involves assessing the stock’s current health and its growth potential.
The growth investor examines the prospects of the stock-growing industry. For example, you might ask if there is a future for electric vehicles before investing in Tesla. Or, A.I. The day-to-day living conditions before investing in a technology company. If the growth of the company’s services or products is growing it must prove to be widespread and strong appetite. Investors can answer this question by looking at the recent history of the company. Simply put: Growth stock must grow. The company must have strong earnings and a consistent trend of revenues indicating its ability to deliver growth forecasts.
The downside to growth investments is the lack of dividends. If a company is in a growth mode, it needs capital to sustain its expansion. It does not leave much (or any) cash for dividend payments. Moreover, with the rapid increase in earnings comes more valuations, which for many investors, is a high-risk proposition.
Strategy: 3 Momentum Investment
Momentum Investors Wave Ride. They believe that the winners will continue to win and the losers will lose. They look to buy stocks that are facing an uptrend. Because they believe the losers will continue to fall, they may choose to short-sell those securities. But short selling is a very risky method. More on that later.
Think of momentum investors as technical analysts. This means they use a strictly data-based approach to trading and look at patterns in stock prices to guide their buying decisions. In essence, momentum investors act in defiance of an effective-market hypothesis. According to this hypothesis property prices fully reflect all the information available to the public. It is very difficult to believe this statement and the strategy seeks to exploit undervalued and overvalued equities.
